As an attempt to save their children and families from a terrible fate, Jewish parents tried fleeing Germany. After fleeing had become practically impossible, Jewish families sought out shelter from any who were willing to risk their lives for the lives of the persecuted. These heroes have become known as "righteous Gentiles." It was because of these people that there were some children that were saved from the imprisonment of camps as seen on the right. It's written in the book Altruistic Personality: Rescuers of Jews in Nazi Europe, that "this group, whom we call rescuers, refused to
abdicate their responsibilities to Jews even while the majority of their
neighbors abandoned them.” (xviii). The book itself "is a study of those people-that small percentage of people-who risked their lives to help some Jews survive the Holocaust," (Altruistic Personality, xvii).
